Greenwich Village, also known simply as The Village, has historically been a focal point of new movements and ideas, whether political, artistic, or cultural. Though its bohemian days are gone, the residents of Greenwich Village still possess a strong community identity and well-known liberal live-and-let-live attitudes. Within its borders you will still find the live music, comedy clubs, art galleries, great restaurants, and diversity that became the soul of this neighborhood.
Rich with history, many famous establishments are still in business today. Music venues such as Village Vanguard, Café Reggio and Café Wha?, which became famous as notable artists like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix got their start there, still attract young musicians looking to make a name for themselves. Venues like Cherry Lane Theatre, which presents unique Off-Off-Broadway productions and schools such as the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture are also still thriving today.
The beautiful Washington Square Park continues to provide a space for self-expression and live entertainment and is continually filled with activists, street performers, and college students.
